COPD A Closer Look At Stem Cells

The US Leader is NOW in Mexico. It was reported that animal recipients of allogenic MSCs tolerated well of these cells administered by injection ( 36 , 37 ). The umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) were cultured and expanded using the UC-SCI technology developed by the Stem Cell Institute, VNUHCM University of Science, Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.

At the time of this writing (April 2019) it appears that stem cell therapy can be safely performed, although the long-term side effects remain unknown. Although your lungs possess their own population of healing adult stem cells, there are simply not enough cells present to keep up with the degree of ongoing lung tissue damage which occurs in COPD.

Substantial work has been done to investigate the mechanisms of COPD and to find new drugs for treating COPD patients. Autologous stem cells are harvested from the patient themselves. Cell therapy with stem cells has been broadly stage 3 emphysema discussed and presented as a new therapeutic approach to degenerative diseases.

Donated patient material is used for organoid cultures to further identify differences between healthy and diseased lungs in response to certain stem cell behaviour cues and how we can manipulate this. A large dose of stem cells are intravenously administered to the patient through an IV. A nebulizer breathing treatment loaded with stem cells or a stem celled loaded inhaler places the stem cell directly into the lungs.

Fernández M, Minguell JJ. Human mesenchymal stem cells from peripheral blood. Accordingly, despite encouraging results in rodent models, the mechanisms by which systemically or intratracheally administered MSCs can have meaningful clinical effects in a chronic disease such as COPD are not clear.

Based on data from the large numbers of pre-clinical studies and preliminary clinical trials with MSCs, possible reasons of failures in the clinical trials were discussed above. Stem cells have natural anti-inflammatory properties, which can clear airways for those with chronic bronchitis.
